About XRP
XRP is the native asset of the XRP Ledger, a blockchain built for fast, low-cost settlement of payments and currency transfers. The ledger does not use mining; instead a set of validators reaches agreement on transaction order every few seconds.
How the XRP Ledger Works
Transactions settle in three to five seconds through a consensus protocol run by independent validators, with fees measured in fractions of a cent. Those fees are destroyed rather than paid to anyone, which slowly reduces supply. The ledger also has a built-in decentralized exchange and support for issued assets.
The History of XRP
The XRP Ledger went live in 2012, created by David Schwartz, Jed McCaleb and Arthur Britto, with Ripple founded shortly afterwards to build payment products on top of it. In 2020 the US Securities and Exchange Commission sued Ripple over XRP sales; a 2023 ruling found that programmatic sales on exchanges were not securities transactions, a decision widely read as favourable to the asset.
What XRP Is Used For
XRP is used to settle value between currencies and across borders, acting as a bridge asset in payment corridors where a direct pair would be thin. It also pays the ledger's transaction fees and is traded as a liquid asset in its own right.
