ApeCoin is the token of the ApeCoin DAO, created to serve as a shared currency and governance asset across the ecosystem that grew around the Bored Ape Yacht Club and its related projects. It is used in games, events and community decisions.
How ApeCoin Works
ApeCoin is governed by a DAO whose members vote on proposals and treasury spending, with an elected board handling implementation. The token is used inside ecosystem products — most visibly Otherside, a virtual world — and as a membership and access asset across partnered projects.
The History of ApeCoin
ApeCoin launched in March 2022 and was distributed to holders of Bored Ape and Mutant Ape NFTs, one of the largest airdrops of its kind. It is deliberately separate from Yuga Labs, the studio behind those collections, and is stewarded by the ApeCoin DAO and the APE Foundation.
What APE Is Used For
APE carries governance votes over the DAO's treasury and direction. It is also the currency within Otherside and a number of partnered games and experiences, and functions as an access token for community events.
