About Bitcoin Cash
Bitcoin Cash is a cryptocurrency that split from Bitcoin in 2017 over how to scale the network. It keeps Bitcoin's overall design and 21 million supply cap but uses much larger blocks so that more transactions fit on-chain at lower cost.
How Bitcoin Cash Works
The chain is secured by proof of work, like Bitcoin, but with a block size raised to 32 MB against Bitcoin's roughly 1 MB equivalent. More capacity per block keeps fees low even when the network is busy, at the cost of a heavier burden on the nodes that store and relay the chain.
The History of Bitcoin Cash
In August 2017 a long-running dispute about scaling ended in a hard fork, and Bitcoin Cash was created by supporters of on-chain capacity increases. The chain split again in 2018, producing Bitcoin SV. Bitcoin Cash has continued to develop independently, adding smart-contract capabilities in later upgrades.
What BCH Is Used For
BCH is used for low-fee payments and transfers, and is accepted by a range of merchants and payment processors. It shares Bitcoin's scarcity model, so it is also held as a store-of-value asset by part of its community.
