About Dash
Dash is a payments-focused cryptocurrency that forked from Bitcoin in 2014 to prioritise speed, low fees and optional privacy. Its network is organized in two tiers, with a layer of collateralised nodes providing services on top of ordinary mining.
How Dash Works
Alongside miners, Dash runs masternodes — operators who lock 1,000 DASH as collateral and in return provide network services and vote on proposals. Those masternodes enable InstantSend, which locks a transaction for near-immediate confirmation, and an optional coin-mixing feature for greater privacy.
The History of Dash
Evan Duffield launched the project in January 2014 as XCoin, renamed to Darkcoin and then to Dash in 2015 as the focus moved from privacy towards everyday payments. It introduced one of the first on-chain treasury systems, funding development from a share of block rewards decided by masternode vote.
What DASH Is Used For
DASH is used for payments where fast confirmation matters, and has seen real merchant adoption in several markets with unstable local currencies. Holding the masternode collateral also grants a vote over the network's treasury and direction.
