EigenLayer introduced restaking, a mechanism that lets staked Ethereum be reused to secure additional services. EIGEN is the protocol's token, designed to extend cryptoeconomic security to faults that Ethereum itself cannot judge.
How EigenLayer Works
Stakers opt in to restake their ETH or liquid staking tokens, pledging that same capital as security for other services — oracles, data availability layers, bridges. Those services pay for the security they rent, and misbehaviour can be slashed. It lets new protocols borrow Ethereum's economic security instead of bootstrapping their own.
The History of EigenLayer
Founded by Sreeram Kannan, a professor at the University of Washington, EigenLayer launched in 2023 and rapidly accumulated one of the largest pools of value in DeFi. The EIGEN token launched in 2024, with a design intended to handle subjective faults that cannot be proven on-chain.
