About Polygon
MATIC was the original native asset of Polygon, an Ethereum scaling network. It has been succeeded by POL, which secures the wider Polygon ecosystem, and holders have been migrating between the two.
How Polygon Works
Polygon runs a proof-of-stake chain alongside zero-knowledge rollup technology, all built so that Ethereum applications can operate at far lower cost. MATIC paid transaction fees and secured the proof-of-stake chain through staking before the network moved to its successor asset.
The History of MATIC
Launched in 2017 as Matic Network by Jaynti Kanani, Sandeep Nailwal and Anurag Arjun, the project rebranded to Polygon in 2021 and became one of the most widely used Ethereum scaling solutions. In 2024 it began migrating MATIC to POL as part of an architecture built around many interconnected chains.
What MATIC Is Used For
MATIC paid gas on the Polygon proof-of-stake chain and was staked to validate it. Those roles have passed to POL, and MATIC now functions largely as a legacy holding pending migration.

Why buy Polygon with YouHodler? +
YouHodler combines advanced security and encryption with a simple way to buy and sell MATIC, fast crypto transactions, support for multiple fiat currencies, and a platform that works for newcomers and experienced traders alike.
Is Polygon a good investment? +
MATIC is a legacy asset: Polygon has moved to POL, which carries the network's staking and governance going forward. Anyone holding MATIC should understand the migration path rather than treat it as the network's current token. It remains volatile — check the current migration status before acting.
Can I buy Polygon today and sell it tomorrow? +
Yes. YouHodler supports selling as well as buying, so you can acquire MATIC and later exchange it for fiat currencies such as USD or EUR. Transactions settle quickly, major fiat currencies are supported, and withdrawals go out by bank transfer.
Is it safe to buy Polygon? +
Buying MATIC is generally safe on a reliable platform like YouHodler, which applies data encryption, identity verification and multi-layer account protection. The asset itself stays highly volatile, so prices can move sharply over short periods.
How do I convert Polygon to cash? +
Connect a bank account, debit card or credit card to your YouHodler profile, exchange your MATIC for a fiat currency such as USD or EUR, then withdraw the balance straight to your bank.
How much is $100 worth of Polygon right now? +
That depends on the live MATIC price, which moves constantly. Use the price chart on this page to see the current rate and work out exactly how much MATIC $100 buys at this moment.
