About USDS
USDS is the dollar-denominated stablecoin of the Sky protocol, the rebranded continuation of MakerDAO. It is backed by a diversified pool of collateral managed on-chain through a decentralized governance process.
How USDS Works
The token is issued against collateral deposited into the protocol, including crypto assets and tokenized real-world instruments, with parameters set by governance rather than a company. Holders can lock USDS into the protocol's rewards module to receive a variable return funded by the protocol's revenue.
The History of USDS
MakerDAO, live since 2017 and the issuer of DAI, rebranded to Sky in 2024 and introduced USDS as an upgraded version of its stablecoin. DAI continues to exist and the two are convertible. The change also introduced a new governance token alongside the long-standing MKR.
What USDS Is Used For
USDS is used to hold dollar value on-chain, as collateral across DeFi and as a settlement asset. Locking it in the protocol's rewards module is the main way holders earn a return on the balance.
