About Ethena
Ethena is a protocol that issues USDe, a dollar-denominated synthetic asset backed by crypto collateral and offsetting derivative positions rather than by bank deposits. ENA is the protocol's governance token.
How Ethena Works
USDe holds its dollar value by pairing collateral with a matching short derivative position, so that gains and losses on the two sides cancel out. The strategy also generates yield from funding rates and staking rewards, which the protocol passes on to those who stake USDe. Everything is executed through custodial and exchange arrangements the protocol manages.
The History of Ethena
Founded by Guy Young and launched in early 2024, Ethena grew very quickly to become one of the largest dollar-denominated assets in crypto within its first year. The design deliberately avoids relying on the traditional financial system, which is both its main selling point and the source of its distinctive risks.
What ENA Is Used For
ENA carries governance rights over the protocol's risk parameters, collateral choices and exchange arrangements. It is also distributed to participants in the ecosystem and staked within the protocol's programs.
